Empowering Communities
The Empowering Communities Programme (ECP) supports local people to build on their strengths, develop local leadership and create lasting positive change. At Limerick City Partnership, we work alongside the Kings Island community, supporting residents through capacity building, partnership working and community-led initiatives.
Empowering Communities - King's Island
Our aim is to help develop a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable community where people feel empowered, connected and proud of where they live — and where social, cultural and economic wellbeing can grow for everyone.
The programme is grounded in the principles of community development, meaning that local people lead the way in identifying what matters most in their area and in developing initiatives that bring their community together.
Our Focus in King's Island
Our work in Kings Island is guided by four key actions:
- Increasing community participation in educational and recreational opportunities
- Enhancing community pride and awareness of biodiversity
- Promoting health and wellbeing for people of all ages
- Strengthening community infrastructure by building the skills of local volunteers and supporting partnership working
Coordinating clean-ups, summer events and children’s camps that bring people together and build community pride.
Hosting activities such as afternoon tea dances, storytelling events, women’s groups, family learning activities and children’s clubs.
Promoting access to informal and formal education and supporting people to explore learning opportunities.
Organising community health awareness events in partnership with local services and organisations.
Working with local partners to deliver events that celebrate the community and encourage participation.
Delivering workshops in the Community Garden to build skills, connection and pride in the local area.
How the programme works
The Empowering Communities Programme (ECP) supports local people to shape their own response to social exclusion and disadvantage. It focuses on capacity building and partnership working, in line with the Government’s strategy Sustainable, Inclusive and Empowered Communities (2019–2024).
A local advisory group, made up of community volunteers and key stakeholders, guides the direction of the work in Kings Island. This ensures that activities and actions are shaped by local voices and reflect real community priorities.
