Building a New Future Through Determination: Nadia's Story

Nadia first met with SICAP staff through a Migrant Outreach Clinic delivered by Limerick City Partnership in collaboration with LCETB and Doras. Having recently arrived in Ireland, she was looking for opportunities to improve her English, recognising that stronger language skills would be key to accessing education, employment and greater independence. Before coming to Ireland, Nadia had worked as a medical professional and hoped to continue her career in healthcare.

SICAP staff referred Nadia to Limerick City Partnership's weekly Conversation Club, a welcoming space where people from different backgrounds can practise English, meet new people and build confidence. She attended regularly and, over time, her communication skills improved significantly while she also developed friendships and social connections within her local community.

As her confidence grew, Nadia wanted to further develop her English through formal classes. SICAP staff referred her to LCETB for an English language assessment, after which she enrolled in English classes. Through her commitment and consistent attendance, she continued to strengthen her language skills and confidence.

Nadia also expressed an interest in volunteering to gain experience, contribute to her community and practise her English. With SICAP support, she secured a volunteer role which helped her build confidence, develop new connections and gain a greater sense of purpose. She also embraced new opportunities to increase her independence and wellbeing, successfully passing her Driver Theory Test and participating in a women's cycling initiative delivered by Limerick City Partnership, where she achieved the personal milestone of cycling 20 kilometres.

As her English improved, Nadia began exploring opportunities to re-enter the healthcare sector. SICAP staff supported her to update her CV and highlight her skills and previous experience for the Irish labour market. She was also supported to research and apply for healthcare-related training courses, which provided an important pathway towards rebuilding her professional career in Ireland.

Nadia continued to meet regularly with SICAP staff for support with job searching and interview preparation. Through these one-to-one meetings, a strong relationship of trust developed. Over time, she disclosed that she was experiencing difficulties within her living environment, which were affecting her wellbeing, studies and ability to focus on her goals.

Recognising the sensitive nature of the situation, SICAP staff worked closely with Nadia to identify appropriate supports. She was accompanied to a local organisation providing practical assistance and was also supported to engage with ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services. Through this collaboration, a support and safety plan was put in place, ensuring she could access practical and emotional support while continuing to work towards her goals.

Nadia's SICAP Support Officer commends her determination and commitment to improving her circumstances. Through consistent engagement with SICAP supports, she strengthened her English language skills, increased her confidence, accessed specialist services, started healthcare training, expanded her social connections and took meaningful steps towards rebuilding her career and achieving greater independence.

Reflecting on the support she received, Nadia shared:

This case study demonstrates the importance of person-centred, holistic SICAP support.

Through strong interagency collaboration, ongoing one-to-one engagement and the development of trust, Nadia was empowered to overcome barriers, access essential services and build the confidence, skills and resilience needed to shape her future.
