Back to Work; Michael’s Story

Michael’s story shows how SICAP’s compassionate, practical support helps individuals overcome barriers, rebuild confidence, and reconnect with opportunities, creating real pathways back into work and independent living.

When Michael first arrived at Limerick City Partnership’s office on Dominic St, he had been out of employment for more than 15 years. He explained that he finally felt ready to return to work but was unsure how to begin. Living with a disability and being disconnected from the workforce for so long made the prospect of returning to employment feel daunting. Despite this, he was motivated, hopeful, and determined to make a fresh start. SICAP staff helped Michael by offering gentle, practical, person‑centred support, beginning with exploring his goals, identifying the barriers he faced, and breaking the process into manageable steps.

Michael shared that he needed support with several areas: preparing for work, searching for suitable roles, creating a CV and cover letter, understanding his employment options, and setting up a bank account to receive future wages. Together, we explored what steps would help him most at this stage of his journey.

One of the first options SICAP staff introduced was the TUS Programme. Its structured and supportive placement model is particularly suitable for individuals returning to work after long‑term unemployment. We discussed the details—hours, expectations, eligibility, duration, and payments—so Michael could make an informed decision. He felt that TUS offered the routine and gentle re‑entry into working life he needed.

We then worked side by side to help Michael develop a tailored CV and cover letter, and completed a TUS self‑referral form. Soon after, Michael received a call from the TUS team, letting him know they would be delighted to place him. The quick, positive response surprised him and gave him a significant boost in confidence.

"Each small step is a step closer to where I want to be, so I am very grateful for your ongoing support."

During follow‑up meetings, Michael mentioned that he had never opened a bank account and felt anxious about the process. After speaking with the TUS team, we learned that a Post Office account would be the most suitable option, as they accept Public Service Cards with proof of address—unlike traditional banks, which require a passport or driving licence as photo ID, which Michael didn’t have. Michael said that setting up the account felt like another meaningful step towards his goal.

As his TUS placement approached, Michael asked if a SICAP team member could attend his meeting with the TUS officer. Sitting with someone familiar made the experience less stressful and helped him feel confident and informed.

Michael's story highlights how compassionate, practical, person-centred SICAP support can help individuals rebuild confidence, overcome barriers, and reconnect with opportunities they once believed were out of reach. Clear steps, reassurance, and strong collaboration between SICAP staff and the TUS team helped remove barriers and create a practical pathway for Michael to return to the workforce. Today, Michael is continuing to build his independence and confidence while actively engaging with new opportunities and goals for the future.
